Carnation Fusarium Wilt

Imagine a future where Carnation Fusarium Wilt is a worry of the past.

Intrinsa breeding with Carnation – Your best defense against Fusarium Wilt comes from the plant power within.

The pain

Fusarium wilt in carnation is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi. This pathogen infects plants through the roots and colonizes their vascular system, blocking water and nutrient transport. The main symptoms include yellowing, wilting, reduced flower production, and eventual plant death. It thrives in warm, moist conditions and can persist in soil for many years. The fungus spreads through contaminated soil, tools, infected plant material, and poor sanitation practices.

The gain

Several prevention and management strategies—such as using disease-free planting material, maintaining overall plant health, applying chemical treatments, and implementing strict hygiene measures—are available, but none can fully eliminate the pathogen from the environment. Moreover, chemical treatments may pose health risks and are subject to increasing regulation. This highlights the need for natural resistance to achieve lasting protection.

Intrinsa® from Dümmen Orange offers a breakthrough solution by bringing to market varieties developed through advanced breeding science, specifically aimed at achieving high levels of disease resistance. Thanks to this innovative approach, the Intrinsa® carnation collection now features varieties with built-in, natural defense against Fusarium wilt.

In trials under high infection pressure with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, our highly resistant varieties showed minimal wilting symptoms—delivering stronger, more resilient plants that maintain their vitality, performance, and commercial value, even under challenging conditions.
